Jupiterdogs - -
improv / Jupiter / space folks
3" cdr on card stock (7" size)
limited 200 copies
It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from Jupiterdogs here at Palimpsest headquarters. The silence was drawn to a close when along with artwork and titles, another 3” cdr arrived fully formed in our mailbox. Unusually a note was also included detailing that this release was ‘recorded live in one session at a new premises where Jupiterdogs had not inhabited before’. It’s also the first time they played together in around 2 years (which lends itself to our theory that much of the previous material sent to us was archival). The material was then compiled early this year. The sound is far less dense than their last release, with the sun shining through the gaps and again they talk in their own language throughout the 3 songs. Perhaps this is like walking across Jupiter towards an unknown destination or is it a folk music from another race entirely?

Pete UM - No Pressure
"‘No Pressure’ is now out on Gagarin Records, the label owned by German eclecto pop maestro, Felix Kubin. The blindin’ artwork for the album was created by dennis tyfus. The album is limited to 350 copies so buy yours today to ensure disappointment. Maybe also buy a copy of Tripel 004 while you’re about it."
It takes a certain wisdom to produce music of this strangeness while maintaining a definite pop sensibility and Pete UMs does it the whole way. His character shines through on the songs with those strange views of the world and interpretations of the movements around him. Acute observations of knowing it all when you're a kid in 'When You're Ten' gets a smile (and a dance) and the outsider edge viewings on 'Social Astronaut' brings to mind Bill Callahan's very early cassettes as Smog, but comparisons fall thin on the ground when working on describing UMs sound. UM sounds like UM. Newer works included on this record (as its a bit of an amalgamation of early, middle and late UM) include 'Eyes', 'God of War' and 'If You Speak My Real Name' showing the definite move from less beat based recordings to slightly more abstract and English sounds, especially in the vocal delivery. Two of everything across the stereo spectrum, all bouncing along a thin trip wire. Which one will fall first?

Dead Rat Orchestra - 8 April 2003
Set recored at Colchester Arts Centre in 2003 from the sound desk - their first live show. You can hear every crackle, creak and whisper of feedback. The set shows a much more electronic/improvised side, comprised of loosely two pieces bases around thematic ideas the band had been working on. Includes computer generated feedback, beaten up record players, glitched music box, an assortment of acoustic oddities and some singing for good measure.

Dead Rat Orchestra Ghostband - (with Mt View Memorial Choir)
Recorded in support of Silver Mt Zion (explaining in part the extended name) at Colchester Arts Centre in 2007, this set comprised only two of the normal trio, who launched into the set with a physical commitment at times causing the audience to stand back to avoid being struck by disintegrating bells. The set comprised pieces old and new, ranging from delicate melodicism to broken chaos, and was imbued by the presence of the missing third member, who led the recorded singing (carefully pieced back together live) in the last a track – a glorious take of the Lullaby.

Dead Rat Orchestra - Palimpsest Festival 2006
Check out a video of this performance on the video page.
This set marked the reconvening after about a year of not playing together - yet the music they produced feels tighter than ever, marked with a new purpose. Starting with a hushing lullaby the set creeping into physical guitar/violin moment set against the snap and crackle of matches and foley snow - both pieces relating to work they had done earlier on a live soundtrack for Nanook of the North. A ramshackle hoedown follows, all crossing rhythms and joyous intent. The last piece using clockchime gamelan, kettle drum and scorching improv fiddle.

ORANGE SLEEVE
"English player C Joynes reached us a few weeks ago with his great guitar CD for Bo’Weavil Recordings. Here he is with a mysterious mini-CD Pianer Magick (PR07) for the Cambridge-based CDR label Palimpsest Recordings. Eleven short pieces for the piano appear at first to be inconclusive, abrupt and inscrutable, yet I am persuaded there is much hidden meaning locked in these haiku-like statements. The cover art seems to depict a flock of wild birds, seen through the overlaid rough-hewn mandala with a square cut out of it. Very good." The Sound Projector
Laid on the hands of Palimpsest after a quiet night in, upon first play the listener was found inside the piano, head upright and body forward. Gently notes falling and hard notes playing. Cut and paste in the gap between forward and backwards. In the words of Mr. Joynes, it’s a ‘rudimentary channelling of Debussy / Monk / Morricone / Cage’ and it’s the simplistic style and directness which sees the playing instantly recognisable as Joynes’ own. The record is a set of improvised piano miniatures ranging in length from 6s to 3mins. Recorded on one hour-long session late one Sunday afternoon on a baby grand in an empty 16 bedroom house on the edge of Exmoor, then left to lie fallow and finally edited and reshaped over the course of a week 6 months later. Mastered to tape by SL at HTHQ six months after that.
C Joynes is best know for his post-Takoma school of guitar playing ‘Anglo-naive and contemporary parlour guitar’. He has 3 releases on his own imprint ‘Leith Hill Recordings’ as well as seeing a reissue of his 2nd release ‘God Feeds the Ravens’ on the London based Bo’ Weavil Recordings.
