New releases from C Joynes 'Pianer Magick' and The Doozer 'Sheet Music' added. MP3 samples (more on the way).

'C Joynes in conversation with God' is the first of a series of specially commissioned short films for Harvest Time Records. Not content in falling into a straight interview, this 18 minute short takes you on a journey over the fens with Mr. Joynes. It features conversations on his inspirations, childhood, travels and whether or not to walk on the path. It is available to stream on the video section of the website.

Sheet Music

'Sheet Music has a lovely constructed precision underlying its surface awkwardness, with a gift for finding chords or sour melodic twists that initially sound wrong but turn out right. His counter-intuitive logic and oblique associations put him in a lineage connecting The Incredible String Band, Kevin Ayers and Billy Childish, but most of all another Cambridge alumnus Syd Barrett. The Doozer has a voice of his own, though, and the quavers and quirks of songs like 'Dog Walking' and 'Burn The Tape' lodge themselves in the brain with strange persistence' The Wire

The Doozer builds. He has previously built stone houses and wooden ships. He is currently building music. Raised around the Fenlands of Cambridgeshire, in the arse end of nowhere, the city drew closer and closer, the lights brighter and the time shorter. The city informs his music. His music informs the city. Songs evolve around watching and talking, buying and borrowing. Characters pass by, situations are imagined, colours are added and the resultant is a forming song.

His debut album, ‘Sheet Music’, was recorded mainly on Saturday mornings, bright and early. The songs weren’t complete until the recordings were complete. The spaces always changed. Instruments and voices were layered. Pop music was the aim; pop music isn’t quite the result. Pop music is The Doozer’s music, only filtered through all of the colours and sounds you’ve imagined when walking through the street or down your lane or when your batteries died.

ORANGE SLEEVE

Laid on the hands of Palimpsest after a quiet night in, upon first play the listener was found inside the piano, head upright and body forward. Gently notes falling and hard notes playing. Cut and paste in the gap between forward and backwards. In the words of Mr. Joynes, it’s a ‘rudimentary channelling of Debussy / Monk / Morricone / Cage’ and it’s the simplistic style and directness which sees the playing instantly recognisable as Joynes’ own. The record is a set of improvised piano miniatures ranging in length from 6s to 3mins. Recorded on one hour-long session late one Sunday afternoon on a baby grand in an empty 16 bedroom house on the edge of Exmoor, then left to lie fallow and finally edited and reshaped over the course of a week 6 months later. Mastered to tape by SL at HTHQ six months after that.

C Joynes is best know for his post-Takoma school of guitar playing ‘Anglo-naive and contemporary parlour guitar’. He has 3 releases on his own imprint ‘Leith Hill Recordings’ as well as seeing a reissue of his 2nd release ‘God Feeds the Ravens’ on the London based Bo’ Weavil Recordings.

C Joynes - God Feeds The Ravens (Re-Issue)

BW28 - Bo' Weavil Recordings - instrumental guitar / folk

English acoustic guitarist C Joynes, a resident of Cambridge, has released a few self produced excellent CDRs, but here sees his first Bo' Weavil release. Joynes uses a heavy thumb-led finger-picking technique that harks back to traditional country-blues and early ragtime, however, he uses this technique to explore alternative melodic traditions: the English folk-tune; North and West African music; elements of classical Indian music; proto-minimalist and impressionist musics from the European classical tradition. His approach to the recording and compositional rocess contains a subtle and unassuming experimentation, at times including collaged fragments, field recordings, processing, en-plein-air recordings, and cut-and-paste. The version of ‘Since I Lay My Burden Down’ incorporates variations on lyrics and vocal lines drawn from a different song entirely. He has a penchant for reworking over-familiar pieces and stripping them of their kitsch and cliché, presenting them afresh, such as with ‘Christmas Medley’, the arrangement of ‘A Night In Tunisia’, and the gospel-based ‘And When The Sun Begins To Shine’. Joynes’ music is instinctive, well-researched, placid, and evokes a certain simplicity and naiveté. (Rhodri Davies)

'This release is endorsed by Rhodri Davies, the great Welsh harp player who is usually associated with avant and improvised music, and he provided the sleeve note; speaking personally, I’ll trust Rhodri’s advice on anything. A fine collection of slow and sad music which somehow seems uniquely English too; the beauty of an English spring day is captured on the front cover (a still from a film about trees and clouds), while the inner sleeve prints a map of the British Isles indicating all the named stations from the shipping forecast (a broadcast which is of course known to all BBC radio four listeners as pure weather-poetry, from the airwaves)'. Sound Projector

'There's every chance that even the most ardent six (or indeed twelve) string enthusiasts are a bit fatigued by it all. I can heartily recommend you make room for one more however, because this homegrown talent has plenty to contribute to the genre'. Boomkat
